The following activities have been developed for educators to use in both formal and informal education settings and provide a way to engage with the history of the Eastern Shawnee.


Activity 2.1 – Using Maps to Understand Removal

Summary: In this activity, students will learn about the forced removal of the Ohio Shawnee from the Ohio River Valley through the analysis of maps. Students will analyze secondary source maps to understand both the historical context and lasting impacts of the U.S. governmental policy of forced removal throughout the 19th century. Through this process, students will practice map reading skills to draw and support conclusions regarding Eastern Shawnee removal history and its lasting impacts.

Activity 2.2 – Eastern Shawnee Movement: Summary Timeline

Summary: In this activity, students will summarize the major periods of movement in Eastern Shawnee history in a timeline that includes both words and images. Through this process, students will demonstrate their understanding of removal, allotment, and migration to the Pacific Northwest as they relate specifically to the Eastern Shawnee.
